Tutoring
When starting down the road of learning a language, prospective learners typically have a lot of questions. This list of FAQs should help answer some of the questions that you may have. Additionally, you can always reach out to ask any other questions that you may have via the Contact page.
How do I know if we will be a good fit for each other?
First, think about what you want your learning experience to be. Your expectations and learning style will be part of figuring out fit. Your relationship with your Spanish tutor is crucial to your success, you’re going to see a lot of this person, pay them, and trust them with your journey.
Since there’s no easy way to decide fit, I offer a free 20 min intro call, to meet one another before you commit to a package.
How much should I expect to study on my own?
It depends isn’t a satisfactory answer, even if it’s true. On average, 2-3 hours on your own each week, coupled with a 45 minute lesson with me, is the sweet spot between progress and commitment. Some weeks you may not study at all, others you will make loads of progress. Life is like that. One thing is for sure, while you have a package with me, you won’t have to come up with what to work on by yourself. We will make your assignments flexible to your life. They can be what you’re imagining (videos, documents, textbooks, etc) but also watching a show, listening to a podcast, writing in a journal, reading a book and more!
How long will it take me to get conversationally proficient or fluent?
Time to conversational / fluent will be directly correlated to your effort level. For an example, let’s say you are a complete beginner and you take a one lesson per week, as well as spend the recommended 3 hours studying on your own. It should take you about 6 months to feel comfortable in select conversations that matter to you, and about a year to feel conversationally comfortable and prepared for broader situations such as travel encounters, work conversations, etc. Fluency can take years, where at a certain point you will be ready to continue your studies on your own or with minimal assistance to stay on track.
What is the structure of a class?
Once we’ve established your level and goals, we’ll create a customized study plan. I have a 11-year tested curriculum that provides a step-by-step order for learning from day 1 for beginners. If you’re more experienced, we will plug any gaps and make sure you’re conversational with what you know. No two students follow the exact same path. One thing I will ensure is that we have some amount of conversation, every class. It gets less nerve-wracking with practice, and I promise I’ll meet you where you are and encourage you. Another thing is I will always have something for you to do between classes, be it big or small. That way, you’re always keeping your momentum. The joy I find in this work is watching you grow, and being flexible every step along the journey.
How do I know what package to buy?
Basic Packages – If you want lessons at a discount, here the more lessons purchased, the greater the discount. After each class, you’ll receive a customized assignment. Workbook and paper materials included, no video library access.
Video Packages – You’ll have lessons at least twice a month, with guidance on assignments (video, worksheets, custom recommendations) and some feedback on assignments between classes
Spanish Support – We’ll build a customized study plan together. You have the ability to be in a constant conversation with me throughout the weeks in between the Zoom lessons with reminders, grading, reading a book together, voice messages, etc. You’ll have access to dozens of videos on all topics including study habits and grammar. You can go from low / no study to building a strong study habit and understanding of grammar in the 3 months, and can shift levels (beginner to intermediate for example) in 9 months, with consistent study.
If you’re not ready for a lesson package, try a trial lesson here, or check out my Products page for low or no-cost learning options.
How do I pay?
You can pay through Zelle, Venmo, or PayPal. Instructions are provided via email once you decide on a package.
For more on payments, go to Terms and Conditions
NOTE: It is very rare to achieve your goals through only purchasing one package. Most students end up purchasing more than one package throughout their time working with Gringa Consulting, so don’t worry too much about what length you choose for your first package. If you have further questions about what package to buy please use the Contact page to enquire further.
