Tutoring
When starting down the road of learning a language, prospective learners typically have a lot of questions. This list of FAQs should help answer some of the questions that you may have. Additionally, you can always reach out to ask any other questions that you may have via the Contact page.
How do I know if we will be a good fit for each other?
First, think about what you want your learning experience to be. Your expectations and learning style will be part of figuring out fit. Your relationship with your Spanish tutor is crucial to your success, you’re going to see a lot of this person, pay them, and trust them with your journey.
Since there’s no easy way to decide fit, I offer a free 20 min intro call, to meet one another before you commit to a package.
How much should I expect to study on my own?
It depends isn’t a satisfactory answer, even if it’s true. 2-3 hours on your own each week, coupled with a 45 minute lesson with me, is the sweet spot between progress and commitment. Some weeks you may not study at all, others you will be deeply immersed for hours. Life is like that, I will make your assignments flexible to your life. Homework can be what you’re imagining (documents, textbooks, etc) but it’s also watching a movie, listening to a podcast, writing in a journal, reading a novel and more!
How long will it take me to get conversationally proficient or fluent?
Time to conversational / fluent will be directly correlated to your effort level. For an example, let’s say you are a complete beginner and you take a one lesson per week, as well as spend the recommended 3 hours studying on your own. It should take you about 6 months to feel comfortable in select conversations that matter to you, and about a year to feel conversationally comfortable and prepared for broader situations such as travel encounters, work conversations, etc.
What is the structure of a class?
It’s totally customizable. I have a 10-year tested curriculum that provides a step-by-step order for learning from day 1. But I have never taught the same way twice, and you’ll have individual needs. One thing I will ensure is that we have some amount of conversation, every class. It gets less nerve-wracking with practice, and I promise I’ll meet you where you are and encourage you. Another thing is I will always have something for you to do between classes, be it big or small. That way, you’re always keeping your momentum. The joy I find in this work is watching you grow, and being flexible every step along the journey.
